Each year we spend hours browsing the internet, bull catalogues and the Holstein International magazine (http://www.holsteininternational.com) looking for bulls which we think will aid us in achieving the type of cow we would like to be milking at Stormview.
We have used bulls from most of the larger Holstein populations across the globe, as well as domestic sires, with a variety of results! As we have learned more from our successes and failures, we have become more focused on a handful of traits which are important to us, and less focused on having the latest "Glamour bulls" in our tanks.
We are aiming to breed capacious cows with great udders and good components, in an ideal world, our cows would be producing 400kgs of milksolids per cow on a grass based system, which we could then use as a starting point to increase production with the addition of maize silage and PKE. At Stormview we take the view that you have to be able to feed them in order to make breeding them worthwhile.
Elsewhere on this website you will find the rundown on the genetics and origins of the cows at Stormview, this page will contain a rundown of the bulls we are using at present, and probably a list of the bulls we are considering using for the upcoming mating season, don't be suprised to find a bull you have never heard of on these lists, it has been known for us to try a bull or two just to see what we would get, not always resulting in the fantastic animal we had in mind!!
